5 Quirky yet Potentially Useful Apps for Your Writing Life

I know you need one more app, right? Well, these are at the very least worth exploring for assisting us in keeping focused and organized as writers. They are a bit quirky too, but I think they could be useful.

SelfControl is a free and open-source application for Mac OS X that lets you block your own access to distracting websites, your mail servers, or anything else on the Internet. Just set a period of time to block for, add sites to your blacklist, and click “Start.” Until that timer expires, you will be unable to access those sites–even if you restart your computer or delete the application.

Write or Die 2

Write or Die is an application for Windows, Mac and Linux which aims to eliminate writer’s block by providing consequences for procrastination and, new to this version, rewards for accomplishment. Historically Write or Die has specialized in being the stick in the carrot/stick motivation continuum, but it’s time to experiment with encouragement.

MindNode makes mind mapping easy. Mind maps are a visual representation of your ideas, starting with a central thought and growing from there. This allows you to brainstorm & organize your thoughts in an intuitive way, so you can focus on the idea behind it.

Help Me Write

Help Me Write is a web app that helps you decide what to write next. Here’s how it works:

  1. You add things you are thinking of writing about to your profile page.
  2. You share your page via Twitter, Facebook (or wherever) and ask your networks what they would like to read most.
  3. Once you’ve written the thing that you think has the most interest you can then send it directly to all the voters.

Omm Writer

OmmWriter is your own private writing room where you can close the door behind you to focus on your writing in peace. Everywhere you go, you have access to a beautiful distraction-free writing environment where your authentic voice is free to go where it is meant to go.

If your problem is self-control, writer’s block or a need to organize some scattered thoughts, then there is an app for those things. You don’t have to try these, but be open to a tool that can help your writing life.
